U-352
World War II submarine wreck · Off Cape Lookout, North Carolina, United States

About this site
U-352 was a German Type VIIC submarine that patrolled the Atlantic during World War II. On May 9, 1942, it fired at the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Icarus off Cape Lookout and missed. Icarus attacked with depth charges, forcing U-352 to surface; its crew abandoned and scuttled the submarine. The Coast Guard rescued survivors, while other crew members died in the action.
The wreck rests in about 110 feet of water. NOAA has documented the submarine with photographs, sonar, and a site plan, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site remains a place of loss as well as a popular North Carolina wreck dive.
What divers may find
Divers can see the submarine’s surviving structure amid corals, anemones, baitfish, and amberjack. Conditions vary, and the depth calls for appropriate training and planning. Olympus Dive Center lists the site as a no-penetration dive.
